![]() ![]() Depending upon the formality of the build and release mechanisms, the organization may package the software multiple times, running tests of all kinds internally, before letting it out into the wild. I will call the next number in the version identifier the Release. There can be more than one update per version. An update may add features or fix problems or improve performance but it almost always upward compatible. The next number to the right in the version identifier is typically the Update. Often these changes make parts of the new version incompatible with the older versions features may be added, changed or dropped. The releasing organization will change this number when there are major changes in the feature set of the software. I will call the leftmost number in the version identifier, the Version. The standards for versioning were varied, but there are some general guidelines that most of them followed. I developed software for many decades for several organizations. ![]()
